Vikings around the world
The Vikings travelled far and wide across seas and rivers, as far as Greenland and America in the north-west and the Caspian Sea in the south-east.
Sometimes they traded with the people they met. Sometimes they ravaged the surrounding area. Silver and luxury goods flowed to the Nordic region.
Newly founded trading centres, such as Birka in Lake Mälaren, became important stops as the Vikings headed out into the world. That was where people from near and far met and exchanged both goods and ideas: from fashion to religion to money.
