Money made of copper and paper

The world’s largest coin. Europe’s first banknotes. And a revolution in what money can be. It all began with copper exports.

Sweden was Europe’s largest exporter of copper for a long time. Almost all coins were made of silver before the 17th century, but now copper coins began to be produced as well.

Copper coins needed to contain more metal if they were to be worth as much as silver coins. This resulted in the world’s largest coin.

The large plate money could be deposited at Stockholms Banco. The deposit receipts evolved to become Europe’s first banknotes, which quickly became popular. Suddenly you could pay for things with a piece of paper!
