The Church and money
The Church held a great deal of economic power in Sweden for many centuries. In the 11th century, for example, it began to collect our first local tax – the tithe. Gustav Vasa questioned the strong position of the Church after he became king in the 16th century. Many of the Church’s artefacts were seized or destroyed.
