The Great Reduction
Nobles owned much of the land in Sweden in the 17th century. But King Karl XI (1) demanded that they give away half of their estates to the state. The power held by the nobility in the 17th century was weakened. Count Magnus Gabriel de la Gardie was one of the people most severely affected (2).
