The travel revolution
For thousands of years, people used boats, horses or sledges to travel. Travelling took as long in the 18th century as it did in the Viking Age. But in the 19th century, canals (1), steamers (2) and railways (3) came into being in just a few decades. People could travel more quickly, and goods could be transported easily to and from new factories.
