Penny, England, Henry I, 1100–1135
English coins minted after 1050 are rare in Scandinavian finds; but there are no fewer than 14 of them in the Övide hoard. This coin was struck in Chichester between around 1119 and 1121 for Henry I of England. It features the king’s bust portrait in profile and a cross. Coin imports from England peaked in the first quarter of the 11th century at the end of the reign of King Ethelred and the beginning of the reign of King Cnut the Great.
