4 öre, Vadstena, Johan och Karl, 1568

This is a so-called blood klippe. The name comes from the fact that the coin is made from the silver that King Erik XIV gave in blood penance, compensation, to the widow Märta Leijonhufvud after the murders of Svante Sture and two of their sons. When the dukes Johan and Karl were about to rebel against their brother Erik XIV, they received the silver from Märta to mint. The rebellion was minted in Vadstena and the reason why they are so-called klippe coins, square-cut coins, is that they are easier and cheaper to make than round coins.
