Candlestick, Lucas van der Hagen, Stockholm, 1733

The Lohe hoard includes six silver candlesticks, four larger ones and two smaller. Two of the larger candlesticks can be seen here. The four larger candlesticks are identical and were made by the goldsmith Lucas van der Hagen (who was active from 1722 to 1765) in Stockholm in 1733.

Each candlestick has an octagonal foot, shaft and candleholder. The decoration is restrained, but the candlesticks are inscribed with either AL or IL on the lower edge. Two are inscribed AL, and two IL. AL may be the initials of Adolphe Tobias Lohe (1683–1759) and IL the initials of Johanna Lohe (1690–1759) – two siblings who lived at the property on Lilla Nygatan until 1759.
