Hoard from Åby. Sandby parish. Öland.

Roman gold coins known as solidi were imported from the Western and Eastern Roman Empires during what was known as the Migration Period (450 to 550 AD). More than 800 such solidi have been found in Sweden. Most of them were found on the island of Öland, slightly fewer on Gotland and a few on the mainland, the largest find being from Helgö in Uppland.

The treasure on display was found in in the 1940s in a field in Åby on the east coast of Öland, some 4.5 kilometres from the Sandby borg ringfort, during a number of excavations. The coins were probably brought to Öland by local troops who returned home with the money they received in return for their service to the Romans.
