Medal celebrating Gustav II Adolf
This type of commemorative coin was minted or cast both before and after King Gustav II Adolf of Sweden took part in the Thirty Years’ War. These commemorative coins were awarded to warriors who had shown valour in battle, and to people who had rendered important services to the King.
The obverse features a portrait of the king, and on the reverse is a lion. Gustav II Adolf was known as the Lion of the North in Swedish and North German propaganda.
