The Lohe hoard. Lilla Nygatan, Stockholm.
Private banker Johan Lohe was one of Sweden’s wealthiest people. He died in 1704, and his widow Anna bought a house on Lilla Nygatan in Stockholm in 1722. She lived there with Adolf and Johanna, two of her many children. The siblings died in 1759, unmarried and childless. The house is still there now.
A large copper pot was discovered in the flooring of the ground floor in the autumn of 1937. It contained more than 18,200 silver coins (mostly Swedish 1, 2, 4 and 8 mark coins), three medals, a gold chain and eighty-five exquisite silver items – cups, bowls, dishes, tankards, spoons, a teapot, candlesticks.
The most recent coin dated back to 1741. The hoard had been secretly hidden away ever since.
