The hoard from Robbenarve. Garde parish, Gotland.

The Robbenarve hoard was found by two farmhands as they were clearing a field in 1896. This hoard contained 367 denarii struck for Roman emperors from Vitellius in 68 AD to Emperor Septimius Severus in 193 AD. SEK 200 was paid by the Royal Coin Cabinet so that it could add the coins to its collections.

Roman denarii were the first coins to arrive in Sweden. They were imported in the 200s and 300s but had been minted in the first and second centuries AD. It’s believed that these denarii were brought here through trade or looting.

More than 6,600 of the almost 8,000 denarii found in Sweden have been found on Gotland. The coins found on the island of Gotland are usually very worn.
