Zecchino, Italy, Venice, Lorenzo Celci, 1361–1365
The zecchino (sequin), a gold denomination, was introduced into Venetian coinage in the 13th century. This type of coin continued to be produced with its design unchanged until the 19th century. As a result, this type of coin has been used for the longest time without undergoing design changes.
This coin was produced when Lorenzo Celsi was Doge (leader) of Venice between 1361 and 1365. One side shows the Doge kneeling in front of St Mark the Evangelist, patron saint of Venice. On the other side, Jesus Christ is depicted standing inside a mandorla and carrying the Gospel.
