Övide hoard, Eskelhem parish, Gotland, deposited after 1131

In 2012, a hoard was found in Övide on Gotland consisting of 714 silver coins, various types of silver artefacts and a collection of hacksilver. The hoard, weighing about 1.6 kilos, had been placed in a copper container with a lid – a common way of storing treasures in those days.

Almost all the coins in the hoard are imported, mainly from Germany and England. The most recent coin in the hoard is an archiepiscopal pfennig minted in Cologne sometime between 1131 and 1151. The Övide hoard is one of the most recent Viking hoards deposited on Gotland.
