Penning, Svealand, Knut långe, 1229–1234
This coin bears witness to the fact that coins were made in the town of Nyköping in Södermanland. The coin bears the inscription NVCOPIE (= Nyköping in Latin).
In the centre is a letter that could be interpreted as either a K or an R. A K could stand for King Knut the Tall, who reigned in Sweden between 1229 and 1234. Or, if you read it as an R, it stands for the Latin word rex, meaning king.
Only two specimens of this Svealand type coin survive. One was found during archaeological surveys at Skänninge allhelgonakloster (All Saints Monastery) in Östergötland in 1961. The second was found at Kullkyrkan in Mosås in Närke in 1963.
