Sterling, England, Lincoln, Edvard I, 1280–1281

This coin was made sometime between 1280 and 1281 in the English city of Lincoln during the reign of Edward I (1272–1307).

One side shows a crowned portrait with the inscription EDW R ANGL DNS HYB (= Edward, King of England, Lord of Ireland). The way the king was depicted, with a crown and curly hair, also appeared on medieval Swedish coins.

The motif on the other side consists of a large cross with a trio of points at each angle. The inscription says CIVITAS LINCOL’ (= City of Lincoln). The mark at the end is the specific mark used at the mint where the coin was created.
