Coin production underlay, lead

This lead base was used to strike bracteate coins during the reign of Valdemar Birgersson. You can recognise Valdemar's type of coin with a crowned head within a smooth ring, which was minted according to the Götaland weight. The variant has a simplified crown and no similar coins have been found to date. In Örebro, there are 18 lead pieces with 24 impressions of a crowned head.

This minting material also provides information about the manufacturing process. The fact that there are two impressions on the lead piece shows that several coins with the same stamp were struck close to each other.
