Penning, Svealand, Magnus ladulås, 1275–1290

This Svealand penning shows an upper-case M with three dots around it. It has a smooth edge and is available in four variants, all of which are produced with equal strictness. The silver content is about 82 per cent.

The initial M stands for Magnus Ladulås, who overthrew his older brother Valdemar and ruled from 1275 to 1290, when he died. Magnus’s will of 1285 refers to four mints (places where coins were produced) in Svealand: Nyköping, Uppsala, Västerås and Örebro.
