Penning, Svealand, Valdemar Birgersson, 1250–1275

This Svealand penning shows a royal crown with a cross underneath. This coin is unique; this is the only one ever found. Another variant – again, of which only one specimen has been found – shows the initial V for King Valdemar.

Valdemar was the eldest son of Birger Jarl and his wife Ingeborg. Ingeborg was the daughter of King Erik Knutsson. As a royal descendant, Valdemar could therefore be elected king in 1250.

Valdemar issued many different types of Svealand pennings bearing crowns. The different variants of the motif were used to distinguish the coins that he had issued.
