Penning, Gotland, Visby, uncertain authority, 1270–1361

This is one of the oldest pennings to be minted with a well-executed W, indicating the city of Visby. This type of coin started to be issued in the late 13th century and is bracteate, i.e. one-sided. The coins had a high silver content during its first years of issue. 12 pennings made one Gotland örtug.

Several coins of various origins were found in the mass graves on Gotland after the massacre at the Visby city wall on 27 July 1361. Danish, mainland Swedish and older Gotland örtugs and W-bracteates were found in addition to these early W-bracteates.
