Double combs, elk antler

These combs are so-called ‘dubbelhelkammar’, or ‘double whole combs’, which means they are made in one piece and have a row of teeth on two sides. One side has coarse teeth while the other side has a denser serration.

The combs are made of elk horn. They are both decorated with lines and one also has dot circles along the centre. ‘Dubbelhelkammar' were common in Örebro during the 14th century. They were probably made by one or more comb makers who lived in the town.
