1 mark, Stockholm, Fredrik I, 1721

This mark coin was engraved by Johann Carl Hedlinger, one of the most skilful engravers to have worked in Sweden. Born in Switzerland in 1691, Hedlinger had worked as an engraver at a number of mints on the continent before taking up a post in Sweden in 1718. Here, he mainly engraved coins and medals for Queen Ulrika Eleonora and King Fredrik I.

The foundations were laid for the uniform appearance and high artistic quality of the coins during his long period of service, between 1718 and 1745. Hedlinger’s successors, including his pupil Daniel Fehrman, continued engraving coins in the spirit of Hedlinger.
