Penning, Götaland, Erik Knutsson, 1208–1216

Coins dating back to the time of Erik Knutsson when he was King of Sweden in the early 13th century are rare. In fact, this type is the only one that can be confidently attributed to him. The name of King Erik (HERICUS REX) fills the outer ring that runs round a crowned head. The portrait with the curly hair can be viewed as a precursor to the later depictions of Erik’s grandfather, Erik the Saint, who began to be recognised as a saint in Sweden in the 14th and 15th centuries.
