2 riksdaler riksmynt, Stockholm, Karl XV, 1862

The 2 riksdaler riksmynt coin was minted for only four years, from 1857 to 1871. The coin on display is the first 2 riksdaler riksmynt coin of Karl XV. On the obverse (front) we see the king's portrait and on the reverse (back) the Swedish coat of arms with two lions as shield bearers. Along the edge of the coin we can read Karl XV's motto: ‘Land skal med lag byggas (the law shall build the country)’. The sentence is taken from the 13th-century Uppland Act and it was the national antiquarian Bror Emil Hildebrand who had proposed it as Karl XV's motto.
