1 riksdaler, Stockholm, Gustav II Adolf, 1617

Riksdaler coins were mainly struck for international use and not for use within Sweden. On this riksdaler coin struck for Gustav II Adolf we see the Swedish king with crown, sceptre and apple, surrounded by his name and title on the obverse (front) ‘GUSTAVUS ADOLPH(US) D(EI) G(RATIE) SVECOR(UM) GOTHOR(UM) VANDAL(UM) Q(U)E REX’ - ‘Gustaf Adolf with God's grace the king of the Swedes, the Goths and the Wends’.

On the reverse (back), Christ is depicted together with the three Swedish coats of arms that make up the great national coat of arms, along with the text ‘SALVATOR MUNDI SALVA NOS’ - ‘Saviour of the world, save us’.
