1 dukat, Stockholm, Fredrik I, 1738

The East India Company brought cheap, unprocessed gold from China to make ducats in Sweden. Everyone had the right to submit precious metal for minting.

The company wanted to include its special mark, a rising sun, on the ducats. Coin and medal engraver Johann Carl Hedlinger was commissioned to design a draft.

This coin was minted in the name of King Fredrik I, but according to Hedlinger’s design and the wishes of the East India Company.
