1 öre, Reval, Sigismund III, 1597
Estonia was part of Sweden between 1561 and 1721. King Sigismund of Sweden introduced Swedish coinage to Estonia in 1597. The Swedish king had previously minted coins that resembled Estonian coinage.
Sigismund had Swedish öre minted, and the one-öre coin that you see here reads SIGIS.D.G.SVE.ET.POL.REX.97 on the obverse (front) and MONETA NOVA CIVI REVAL on the reverse (back). The inscription (text) says that King Sigismund of Sweden and Poland, by the grace of God, had a new coin struck in the city of Reval in 1597.
