Penning, Svealand, Knut långe, 1229–1234

This Svealand penning shows a lily together with the inscription KANVTVS, Knut. The lily symbolises royalty and is the flower of life. The flower is usually referred to as a French lily when depicted in this simplified form. It has appeared on the coat of arms of the powerful jarl Birger Brosa since around 1160.

This coin type has only been found in a single hoard. It was found together with several other of Knut the Tall’s Svealand pennings when a cemetery wall in Eskilstuna, Södermanland, was demolished in 1879.
