3 daler, Stockholm, Karl, riksföreståndare, 1600

This coin was issued in 1600 when Duke Karl of Södermanland, Värmland and Närke, was proclaimed king by the Riksdag in Linköping. The year before, in 1599, his nephew Sigismund had been deposed as King of Sweden.

Since 1594, Duke Karl had been Sweden's imperial regent (temporary regent) while King Sigismund was abroad. Karl nevertheless continued to reign as imperial regent until 1603, when he began to use the title ‘rex designatus’ - designated king. Duke Karl had already issued coins before, but now the coins no longer featured the duke's provincial coat of arms, but ‘only’ the great national coat of arms. On the other side of the coin, we see the name of God Yahweh printed in Hebrew within a flaming circle.
