12 mark, Stockholm, Johan III, 1590

When regular gold coinage resumed in 1590, the denomination was expressed in marks, which would continue for several decades. The denominations were 48, 24, 122, 6 and 3 marks. Unlike all earlier and later Swedish gold coins, the gold content is only 54.2 per cent. The gold had been mixed with copper. Furthermore, they do not have the king's portrait as the gold coins had previously, but only the king's name.
