Penning, Götaland, Valdemar Birgersson, 1250–1275
Three letters VAL under a crown meant that this coin could be attributed to King Valdemar. He was proclaimed king in 1250 after the death of his predecessor, Erik Eriksson. Erik Eriksson had issued similar Götaland pennings, and Valdemar’s issue of such coins continued the tradition. The letters VAL would differentiate between the coins.
Many of these pennings bearing a crown, both with and without VAL, were part of a large silver hoard found by a farmer and his mother at Brunnsgården, Östergötland in 1786.
