Penning, Svealand, Johan Sverkersson, 1216–1222

Svealand penning with the head of a bird of prey – probably a falcon – in profile and the inscription IOHANNES (Johan). The falcon, like the eagle, is a symbol of power. Falcons were used for hunting in the Middle Ages, and not just in our country. This is a long-standing tradition.

This specimen was found in a hoard found in a bog at Ljungkullen in the parish of Dimbo in Västergötland in 1870, together with several other coins attributable to Johan.
