Penning, Götaland, Johan Sverkersson, 1208–1216
The Götaland coins of King Johan Sverkersson (1216–1222) are possibly the rarest of all coins from the Swedish Middle Ages. Many of the known examples come from a single find from Dimbo in Västergötland.
The motif on this coin is made up of a crown beneath two dots. The inscription reads: IOHANNES (= Johan).
Copies of King Johan’s coins were already being produced in the 17th and 18th centuries. The authenticity of this particular coin has also been called into question in modern numismatic research – research into coins, that is. This risks making an already rare collection of coins even more scarce.
