4 mark, Stockholm, Adolf Fredrik, 1753

The last Swedish markmynt coins were struck under King Adolf Fredrik in 1755. However, it was not until King Gustav III’s coinage reform of 1776/1777 that the mark was abolished as a means of payment. By that time, the mark had been used in Sweden for around 900 years.

Mark coins were used as early as Viking times, but as a unit of weight. In the Middle Ages it was used as a non-physical currency, coins that are used only for bills, invoices, etc. The mark also became a coin in 1536, when Gustav Vasa had the first mark coins struck in Stockholm.
