Weight set, found in Visby, Gotland

This set of weights was found in 1893 by a railway worker together with two fragmentary scales and a few other artefacts relating to scales. It is made up of five spherical iron weights with a bronzed shell. The weights have flat opposing sides which are stamped with weight markings in the form of dots.

The number of dots did not seem to be linked to a particular weight system in the Viking Age. The purpose of the dots was to help the owner keep track of the sequence within the set of weights.
