4 öre, Nyköping, Karl IX, 1587

This coin was issued by Duke Karl of Södermanland. Karl's brother, King Johan III, had given Karl the right to issue coins. The counter-demand was that the coins should bear King Johan's image and name. Karl did not care about this, but on his coins we can instead read Karl's name and title, Duke of Södermanland, Närke and Värmland, together with what would become his motto as regent: ‘DEUS SOLATIUM MEUM’ - ‘God is my comfort’.
