1 schilling, Reval, Johan III, 1569

This is an Estonian schilling issued by King Johan III of Sweden. The schilling was a silver coin, but on this coin we can see that the silver was mixed with copper to save on silver. The coin looked like a pure silver coin when it was new, but the copper in the coin became visible as the coin wore down.

The schilling was introduced in Estonia in 1422/1426 when the country was ruled by the Teutonic Order, a powerful crusader order in the Baltic region in the Middle Ages.
