Penning, unknown mint, Erik av Pommern, 1396–1439

This is a one-sided penning issued by Erik of Pomerania. The crowned head on the coin is a symbol of royal power and does not seek to resemble the king.

Erik of Pomerania became King of the Union of Sweden, Norway and Denmark in 1396 and reigned until 1439. His predecessor, Albrecht of Mecklenburg, also had pennings with the crowned royal head struck at the Stockholm mint.

This penning type, including the ones bearing crowned letters representing other mints, was popular. It continued to be struck by successive regents until around 1520.
