8 mark, Vadstena, Johan och Karl, 1568

This is one of the coins that the dukes Johan and Karl had struck to finance the rebellion against their brother King Erik XIV in 1568. The coins are usually referred to as ‘blood klippenings’ because they are struck from the silver Märta Leijonhufvud received in blood penance, compensation, from Erik XIV after the murders of her husband Svante Sture and two of their sons.

The klippe coins were square-cut, and were minted by the mintmaster Mickel Hansson in Vadstena in the denominations 8, 4, 2, 1 mark and 4 öre. The mintmaster was the person who led the work in the mint.
