Penning, Sigtuna, Olof Skötkonung, circa 995–1000

This coin was minted around 995 in Sigtuna for King Olaf Skötkonung. The maker of the coin is called Leofman and his name is on the reverse. In the early 990s there was a mintmaster named Leofman who worked in Lincoln, England. He minted coins for the English king Ethelred II. Could it be the same Leofman who later worked in Sigtuna? Perhaps. In order to start his own mint, Olof Skötkonung enlisted the help of skilled mintmasters from England.
