Örtug, Åbo, Karl Knutsson Bonde, after 1450

The obverse of this örtug depicts a boat. The coin was issued by King Karl Knutsson Bonde and the boat was the coat of arms of the Bonde family. On the reverse (back) is a shield with three crowns. Around the edge are the inscriptions “KAROLVS REX S G” and “HONETA ABOENS”. REX S G means “king of the Swedes and the Goths”. Karl Knutsson Bonde was the first king to state this on his coins.

This coin was struck in Turku, in present-day Finland, but the Bonde coat of arms also appears on Karl Knutsson Bonde örtugs that were struck in Söderköping and Stockholm.

In the early 16th century, a medieval hoard of 282 coins sank to the bottom of Lake Vättern near Hästholmen in Östergötland. Twenty of them were struck in Turku for Karl Knutsson Bonde.
