Penning, Gotland, uncertain authority, circa 1220–1280

New coin types were introduced on Gotland in around 1220. The new types are similar to the older Gotland coins in terms of technique and weight standards, but they have a variety of new motifs. This coin shows a cross with the letters BBBB on one side and a chequered cross on the other.

There are several different letter combinations on this type of coin, such as RRRR and AOBR. Their meanings are unknown. It has been suggested that the chequered cross is the Cross of St George and could be linked to the Livonian crusade that took place between 1198 and 1290.
