Bottle, Nacka, Björknäs glassworks, 1736–1785

The bottle you see here is what is known as an “emballageflaska” bottle made of green-tinted glass at the Björknäs glassworks on the island of Värmdö outside Stockholm. The glassworks was active between 1736 and 1785.

The seal shows that the bottle is from the Björknäs glassworks. The seal reads “2/3 stop BIÖRKNÄS”, which indicates both the amount of liquid in the bottle and the glassworks where it was made.

The bottle would have contained wine or brännvin, a kind of spirit. The Björknäs glassworks produced not only glass for bottles, but also mirror glass and window glass. Two whole bottles from the Björknäs glassworks, as well as bottles from other glassworks dating back to that era, were found during the survey in the Gubben district in Norrköping. A bottle from the Casimirborg glassworks in Gamleby outside Kalmar and a bottle from the Henrikstorp glassworks in Skåne were found, for instance.
