Penning, Svealand, Valdemar Birgersson, 1250–1275

This is a Svealand penning showing a royal crown with pearls in it. This type of coin was issued in many variants which could, for example, be distinguished by different numbers of dots under the crown.

Several lead bases with a single dot under the crown were found during archaeological surveys conducted in Örebro in 1978. The lead bases are waste from the minting of coins and show that King Valdemar’s pennings were struck in Örebro.

Valdemar reigned until 1275, when he was overthrown by his younger brother Magnus, who took over as king. Valdemar issued both Svealand and Götaland pennings during his 25 years of reign.
