1 daler silvermynt, Avesta, Fredrik I, 1727

The Danish ship Nicobar was on her way to India with her heavy cargo of copper plates when she sank off the south coast of Africa in the summer of 1783. More than 5,000 old plate coins were salvaged in 1987.

24 of them were plates stamped 1 daler in 1727, like the one shown here. They had been minted for King Fredrik, who was married to Karl XII’s sister, Ulrika Eleonora.

During the long reign of Fredrik I, plate coins were issued in four denominations – 4, 2, 1 and ½ daler silvermynt – and most of them were struck at the Avesta mint. They were no longer legal tender from 1778.
