1 taler, Würzburg, Oxenstierna af Södermöre, Axel,

King Gustav II Adolf of Sweden took the city of Würzburg in Bavaria in 1631. After his death the following year, the Swedes held the city until 1635.

The coin you see here was probably minted in Würzburg in 1634 and features a portrait of Swedish Chancellor Axel Oxenstierna on the obverse (front). This was the first time a non-royal person was depicted on a Swedish coin in recent times. The next time this happened was when Alfred Nobel was depicted on a commemorative coin in 2001.
