8 daler silvermynt, Avesta, Karl X Gustav, 1659

Coins of the 8 daler silvermynt denomination were produced under three Swedish rulers: Kristina, Karl X Gustav and Karl XI. Although the coin was lighter than the 10 daler coin, the 8 daler coin weighed over 14 kilos. As a result, the 8 daler coins were often placed in storage as a reserve of wealth instead of being used as a means of payment.

When this plate coin was made, Marcus Kock, founder of the Avesta mint, had been succeeded as mintmaster by his son, Isak. Isak continued to use his father’s mint mark, the arrow shield, but surrounded by two flowers instead of his father’s initials, M K.
