Penning, Sigtuna, Olof Skötkonung, circa 995–1000

This coin was struck in Sigtuna for King Olof Skötkonung in around AD 995. The inscription on the reverse (back) reads “SNELLING ME PROF(ecit)”. This is Latin and means “Snelling made me”.

Snelling was one of the English mintmasters who was active in Sigtuna, but the expression “ME PROF(ecit)” was not used on contemporary English coins. However, there is a German coin with a similar inscription that was struck in Stade. Similar inscriptions also appear on Danish coins from the mid-11th century. This points to influence from the South.
