5 kronor, Mälareprovinsernas Enskilda Bank, 1875

Mälareprovinsernas Enskilda Bank was founded in 1847 and was based in Västerås in Västmanland, with offices in Uppsala, Nyköping, Arboga, Härnösand, Gävle and Söderhamn. The bank printed banknotes in riksdaler banco and riksdaler riksmynt denominations in the early years, and in kronor from 1875.

The vignette on the banknote shows a shield with a lion on either side and symbols for Västmanland (three mountains), Uppland (the orb) and Södermanland (a griffin). Banknotes from the last few years of its operations depicted Roman goddess Ceres and the god Mercury on the obverse and Axel Oxenstierna on the reverse.

This 5-krona banknote from 1875 was printed by J. Bagge in Stockholm. Mälareprovinsernas Enskilda Bank issued banknotes from 1847 and gave up its right to issue banknotes in 1903.
