8 mark, Kalmar, Karl IX, 1603

This coin was minted in Kalmar when Duke Karl was there for his campaign in Livonia. The fact that the coins were struck in Kalmar indicates that the Duke needed new money quickly. There were no mintmasters in Kalmar, so two goldsmiths had to produce the coins.

To make mintage easier, they chose to make what are known as klippings, square-cut coins, which are easier to make than round coins.
